Whether your preference is shallow or deep, wreck or reef, scenic, historic, archaeological or even fossil hunting, diving off the east Dorset and west Wight coasts has much to offer. See the list of wrecks and decide which you'd like to visit. If you prefer reefs and want to try for large plaice or crabs and lobsters, the mussel beds of Christchurch Ledge may provide what you want. Other reefs include the Bridge reef, the infamous Brook and Atherfield ledges, or drift beneath Tennyson Down along the old torpedo testing range, where there are overhangs, small caves, gulleys, ravines and pinnacles. Take a look at the remains of some historic wreckage in Alum Bay, currently being surveyed, or explore an ancient prehistoric site of human existence, now under water in depths from 2 to 15 metres. Visibility is variable, depending on the site, the strength of the tides and, of course, the weather. Inshore, visibility can range from 1 to 10 metres, with 3 to 6 metres being usual. Offshore, visibility has been as good as 30 metres but 10 to 15 is the norm. Our season usually runs from April to October depending on weather. The spring plankton bloom is usually finished towards the end of May and is never as bad as further west.
